Water Safety

South Africa - 01.01.2015 - 30.06.2015

After the December festive season, water safety projects for the new year commenced in full swing.

On 7th and 8th February the Foundation participated in the Midmar Mile, the world's largest open water swimming event. 20 swimmers raised funds for the Foundation as part of the 8 mile charity drive.

On 27th and 28th February, the Foundation attended the WWF Swim for Nature Bridge House Mile in the Franschhoek Valley (see full description and photos under “Water Safety” menu).  The Foundation sponsored a development clinic on the 27th.  48 swimmers from the local farming community attended and 27 of them participated in the 200m novice swim event on the 28th.

On the 24th June, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation visited Maidstone Primary School in Tongaat in the greater Durban area.  252 students (divided into two groups, Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-7) listened enthusiastically to the Foundation’s instructors that spoke about water safety in and around rivers, dams, pools and oceans.  CPR and various rescue drills were demonstrated to the children and the instructors selected learners to show off their new found skills.

The school was so grateful to the Foundation for these talks that they asked the Foundation to start a “Learn to Swim” programme at their school. Of the 252 students, only 47 have swimming skills.

On the 25th June, The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation ran a water awareness talk and demonstration to the children of the Nkobongo Resource Centre. The centre is in Nkobongo, a small township close to Shakaskraal on the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal.  72 children of all ages gathered to listen to the valuable talk on water safety.  A majority of these children come from impoverished areas.

The Foundation will visit this centre again in September before the Spring holidays.
