Learn to Swim & Water Safety

California - Chinatown YMCA of San Francisco - Safety Around Water 2025

During the grant period (2/10/2025 thru 12/31/2025), 275 youth ages 0-17 participated in Safety Around Water (SAW) sessions. We also trained 15 swim instructors to administer swim lessons and 21 people to serve as Red Cross certified lifeguards during swim lessons.

Over the grant period, youth participated in eight, one-day 6-hour swim lessons. Youth were taught using YMCA of USA’s Safety Around Water (SAW) curriculum, which focuses on techniques for breath control, floating, treading water, and safety strokes to protect oneself and others around the water.

During lessons, youth also received safety lessons and awareness talks on subjects such as calling emergency services, “reach or throw, don’t go”, lifejackets, and boating safety. Sessions were split between land (dry) and water activities. Lessons took place in Chinatown YMCA’s indoor, 5-lane, 25-yard saltwater pool.

Swim instructors facilitated SAW instruction and Red Cross certified lifeguards provided safety and security during lessons.
